Here is a key to finding success on the mat here at Stmarysbjj or on any Jiu Jitsu mat. This is a tip that takes no more time out of your day and barely any more energy. I was so lucky to have the mentors I've had in my Jiu Jitsu journey, and this tip is one of the reasons. It's so funny how a simple statement can have a profound effect on the rest of your Jiu Jitsu.
The statement was " Only mindful reps. No mindless reps." This was said to me and classroom full of students by my friend, coach, and mentor Paul Greenhill. I have no idea if it was meant for me specifically or if anyone got the same profound effect from it that I did.
It's a simple principle really. Every repetition you do in class should be done with focused attention and an active mind. Even moves that you've drilled a thousand times before you can still improve in as long as you are mindful in your approach.
In fact I would go as far as to say that 100 mindful reps are worth at least 1000 mindless reps.
When I say mindful I mean that I am focused on every step of a technique. I'm applying every tip the instructor mentions while explaining the technique. If I have it down I'll practice it with my eyes closed. I'll talk myself through each step out loud. As long as you aren't just knocking out reps for the sake of getting reps you are on the right path.
Most importantly if you are having trouble while drilling a technique slow down, try something else. Try to see if you can recall what the instructor said before giving up.
Lastly ask questions.
Remember, "Only Mindful Reps!" I promise this will improve your jiu jitsu immediately.
